Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Casualty, Holby City and Doctors come together to support climate change.

Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks, Casualty, Holby City and Doctors will air crossover storylines in an effort to highlight climate change issues, it has been announced.

The initiative has been timed to coincide with the UK hosting the COP26 summit in Glasgow in November, which will see the world's leaders gather for a conference on tackling climate change.

The event will include a Hollyoaks character appearing in EastEnders, while one of the Doctors team will pop up on the cobbles of Coronation Street.

Corrie characters will be seen looking at a social media video featuring two of Emmerdale's residents, a social media video from Weatherfield will be chatted about in the Queen Vic and villagers on Hollyoaks will learn about events at Holby City. Casualty, meanwhile, will be discussed in the Woolpack.

The initiative was originally conceived by Emmerdale's executive producer Jane Hudson and over the last few months, the respective teams from each soap have been collaborating about bringing the idea to screen.

"Never before have all five soaps and both continuing dramas come together and united in telling one story," she said. "And we certainly haven't seen characters pop up in other shows before. This is a real treat for our audience, whilst also allowing us to get across a very important message."

Kate Oates, the BBC's head of continuing drama, added: "I'm thrilled that our soaps and serial dramas have all come together to help highlight the issue of climate change amongst our millions of viewers.

"We're grateful to the teams that made this happen, and hugely look forward to seeing the talent from our own shows popping up in other iconic programmes."

The scenes will air across all of the shows in the week starting on Monday, November 1.
