Prime Ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak agrees to sit down with Andrew Neil for a live interview on Channel 4 on Friday night.

Prime Ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak has agreed to be interviewed by political heavyweight Andrew Neil live on Channel 4 this Friday night.

The former Chancellor is going head-to-head with foreign secretary Liz Truss in a bid to succeed Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative Party and by dint, become the next PM.

Over the next month, as party members cast their votes, the two contenders will take part in a number of live head-to-head television debates, as well as multiple hustings events around the country.

Neil, 73, is renowned for his dogged and forensic interviews with politicians - so much so that Johnson did not agree to be interviewed by him ahead of the 2019 general election.

Sunak has accepted an invitation for a one-on-one interview with Neil, live on Channel 4 between 7.30pm and 8pm on Friday night.

Truss has declined to take part, meanwhile, but the broadcaster said in a statement that her "invitation remains open".

Louisa Compton, head of news and current affairs at C4, said: "We're delighted that Rishi Sunak has confirmed he will be interviewed by Andrew Neil on Channel 4.

"We hope that Liz Truss also now agrees - and allows the British public to better understand what she stands for."

The pair are due to take part in a head-to-head debate on BBC One live from 9pm tonight.
