Jonas Vingegaard has been confirmed as the 2023 Tour de France winner after completing Sunday's final stage.

The defending champion, racing for UCI WorldTeam Team Jumbo–Visma, did the hard yards earlier this week, dominating the individual time trial and surging clear of rival Tadej Pogacar in a race-defining stage a day later.

With a gap of more than seven minutes, the Dane has been required to stay out of trouble during the closing stages of the showpiece race to deservedly collect a second title.

Vingegaard came home with the rest of the peloton as Jordi Meeus upset the odds to deny Green Jersey holder Jasper Philipsen a fifth stage win of the 2023 edition.

In the general classification, Vingegaard finished seven minutes 29 seconds ahead of Pogacar, acknowledging that he had to go to extreme lengths to win in such style.

After the race, the 26-year-old said: "I'm happy of course - we're winning it for the second time and it's amazing.

"It's been a super hard race and a super good fight between me and Tadej. Of course, I hope to come back next year to see if I can take the third win."

Twin British brothers Adam Yates and Simon Yates finished third and fourth in the general classification respectively, 10 minutes 56 seconds and 12 minutes 23 seconds behind the victor. body check tags ::
