The ECB confirms that all-rounder Ben Stokes has been appointed as the new Test captain of England.

The ECB has confirmed that Ben Stokes has been appointed as the new captain of the England Test side.

Earlier this month, Joe Root made the decision to step down from a role that he had held for five years, and Stokes was immediately made favourite to take on the position.

The ECB, with new managing director Rob Key at the helm, has now officially confirmed the all-rounder as the 81st skipper of England in the five-day area.

Stokes said: "I am honoured to be given the chance to lead the England Test team. This is a real privilege, and I'm excited about getting started this summer.

"I want to thank Joe (Root) for everything he has done for English Cricket and for always being a great ambassador for the sport all across the world. He has been a massive part of my development as a leader in the dressing room, and he will continue to be a key ally for me in this role."

The 30-year-old's first game in charge is due to come on June 2, when England are scheduled to begin their three-Test series against New Zealand. body check tags ::
